Poverty Simulation
The Poverty Simulation provides a practical and interactive experience that breaks down poverty stereotypes by allowing participants to step into the real-life situations of others. Poverty is often portrayed as a stand-alone issue – but this simulation allows individuals to walk a month in the shoes of someone who is facing poverty and realize how complex and interconnected issues of poverty really are. The objective is to sensitize us to the day-to-day realities and hopes to motivate participants to serve students, families, and their communities more effectively and empathetically.
During the simulation, each participant is given an identity, placed in a family, and “lives” a “month” in poverty. Each family must work together to provide food, shelter, and a steady source of income. It is especially important for a family to learn how to access the resources available in the community.
